Munkacsi at MOMA

Through September 16, Martin Munkacsi has an exhibit at SF MOMA. The exhibit includes about 125 photos, some of them quite wonderful. Others don't seem quite novel, but must have been when they were taken in the 1920s and 30s. The photos are a mix of photojournalism in Berlin and protofashion photography in New York. I can't say that I knew much about Munkacsi before the exhibit, but I did recognize some of my favorite photos (e.g., the dark silhouettes of three boys running into ocean waves) that I didn't know were his. Apparently, Munkacsi's work is not well known because of his financial troubles later in life. But his early work inspired Cartier-Bresson and Avedon among others.
